Background of the Study

Voice disorders, including conditions such as dysphonia, laryngitis, and vocal cord paralysis, can significantly impact a person’s ability to communicate effectively, affecting both social and professional life (Elawad et al., 2023). These disorders can range from temporary conditions due to overuse or infection, to chronic conditions requiring long-term management. Nurses play a critical role in supporting patients with voice disorders, not only by assisting in the medical management of the condition but also by providing emotional support and education to help patients cope with the psychological effects of their condition (Abdullahi et al., 2023).

In Borno State, where healthcare access may be limited due to conflict and infrastructural challenges, the role of nurses becomes particularly crucial in managing voice disorders. Nurses in Borno State hospitals may be tasked with helping patients manage their condition through education about voice conservation techniques, providing psychosocial support, and encouraging adherence to treatment regimens (Aminu et al., 2023). However, there is limited research on the specific contributions of nurses in improving the quality of life for patients with voice disorders in this region. This study aims to assess the role of nurses in enhancing the quality of life of such patients in Borno State.

Statement of the Problem

Voice disorders can severely affect a patient's quality of life, leading to isolation, frustration, and depression. Despite the significant role of nurses in managing these conditions, there is limited information on how nurses contribute to improving the quality of life for patients with voice disorders in Borno State. This gap in knowledge warrants an investigation into the specific roles that nurses play in improving patient outcomes and enhancing quality of life in this context.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in managing the quality of life of patients with voice disorders in Borno State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in improving patients’ psychological well-being and coping mechanisms.
  3. To explore the challenges faced by nurses in providing care for patients with voice disorders in Borno State.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in improving the quality of life of patients with voice disorders in Borno State?
  2. How effective are nursing interventions in improving the psychological well-being of patients with voice disorders?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing patients with voice disorders in Borno State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses' interventions significantly improve the psychological well-being and quality of life of patients with voice disorders in Borno State.
  2. There is a positive correlation between nursing education on voice conservation techniques and improved outcomes in voice disorder patients.
  3. Limited resources and training hinder nurses' ability to effectively manage patients with voice disorders in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on patients with voice disorders in healthcare facilities in Borno State. It will assess the role of nurses in managing these patients, with a particular emphasis on improving quality of life. Limitations may include the variability in nursing training across different hospitals and the difficulty of accessing a representative sample of patients with voice disorders.
